Frequently Asked Questions:

What is BE SAFE?

BE SAFE is a curriculum to help teens and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities learn how to safely handle emergency situations and interactions with law enforcement. BE SAFE Interactive Events are positive and uplifting.

Who would benefit from BE SAFE curriculum?

BE SAFE curriculum is appropriate for middle school to adult aged individuals who may have difficulties in communication, social interactions, self-management, problem-solving and emotional awareness.

Why is BE SAFE curriculum effective?

BE SAFE utilizes evidence-based practices founded on the methodologies of ABA (applied behavioral analysis). Positive video-modeling shows viewers how to interact with the police in everyday encounters. Students learn the appropriate skills necessary to respond to community officers and professionals safely and appropriately, ultimately increasing their safety, community integration and independence.

What will happen during Chandler PD’s BE SAFE Interactive Event?

Attendees and officers will socialize, play games, watch short BE SAFE episodes together and role-play to learn and practice important safety skills. A K9 officer will talk about his responsibilities and training and put on a demonstration with his K9 partner.  A Motor Officer will talk about his responsibilities and training and conduct a simulated traffic stop demonstration in the parking lot. We will take a short break for pizza, which will be provided.
