Take The Pledge Against Distracted Driving

The Chandler Police Department, Chandler Fire, Health, & Medical Department, Safe and Secure, Inc., and Ocotillo Friends recently launched a Distracted Driving Campaign to the Chandler community. The campaign is in response to an increase in traffic collisions due to distracted driving.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), 2015 crash reports show 48% of the drivers involved in a collision were distracted by an activity with an electronic device (ADOT, 2015).

Cellphone use laws have been enacted in several cities with the desire to reduce traffic collisions as a result of drivers being distracted by cellphone use. The resulting research has shown a very small decrease in collisions involving distraction. (Journalist Resource, 2014).

The Carnegie Mellon group also did research into this concern and found that without consistent directed enforcement drivers will continue to operate vehicles while using cellphones (Carnegie Mellon University Research Group, 200870-80). The group also found that the highest distraction to a driver is speaking while driving.
