The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded the Chandler Police Department’s Traffic Unit with a $65,000 DUI enforcement grant. This grant will fund additional officers to focus solely on traffic enforcement associated with the detection of impaired drivers during the 2012 holiday season. The grant also funds enforcement on all major holidays in 2013, along with other events including Super Bowl Sunday, spring break, and prom and graduation nights.
A high percentage of serious injury and fatal collisions involve impaired drivers. While DUI enforcement is traditionally associated with alcohol-impaired drivers, many of today’s impaired drivers are operating vehicles under the influence of prescription or illicit drugs. The tragic results of these collisions – aside from significant personal and insurance costs related to property damage – include injury and death.
Officers funded by this grant are specially trained in DUI detection methods, including the detection of drugs in the human body. The enforcement details will cover the entire city.
