Chandler PD is coordinating the Cops on Top hiking expedition for Arizona this year. Cops on Top is a team of volunteers from the law enforcement and public service community from each state, who undertake mountain climbing expeditions to honor the memories of those heroes who have lost their lives in the line of duty protecting others. Every year this organization has members from each state hike to the highest point in their state to honor a specific officer killed in the line of duty. In Arizona that point is the top of Humphrey’s Peak in Flagstaff, with an elevation of 12,633 feet. All of the hikers in each state will attempt to summit their respective mountains on June 30,2012.
The Arizona team, which consists of 137 members representing 19 different law enforcement agencies throughout the state, is hiking in honor of Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Bill Coleman. Deputy Coleman was killed in the line of duty on January 8, 2012 when he was fatally shot by a suspect while responding to a burglary call.
