CHANDLER, AZ-
The Chandler Police Department has been awarded grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to enhance traffic safety efforts. This initiative primarily targets reducing speeding and aggressive driving in the region.
Speeding, along with driving under the influence (DUI) and lack of occupant protection, ranks among the top three causes of fatal accidents on Arizona’s roads. Despite ongoing efforts, speed-related incidents continue to contribute to traffic deaths in the state significantly. Arizona’s laws specifically address aggressive driving under ARS § 28-693, defining it as exceeding speed limits while engaging in at least two of the following actions: ignoring traffic signals, improper lane usage, unsafe lane changes, tailgating, failing to yield, and creating immediate hazards for others.
To address aggressive driving, the GOHS equips law enforcement agencies with necessary resources such as overtime patrol funding, unmarked vehicles, and speed-detection tools. These measures aim to improve road safety and decrease aggressive driving incidents across Arizona.
