Domestic Violence Suspect Killed in Officer Involved Shooting

On Friday, March 13, 2020 around 6:30pm, the Chandler Police Department Communications center received a 911 call from a female at a residence in the 100 block of North Sacramento Street. The female told the call-taker a male, identified as 41 year-old Rosario Angel Alvarado, was inside the home with a knife and was trying to kill her.

Shortly after officers arrived Alvarado, who was still at the home, began yelling from inside at the officers.  As the third patrol unit arrived all officers observed Alvarado exit the home from the car port area holding a gun in his hand.  Alvarado ignored numerous commands from officers to drop the handgun.  Alvarado raised the handgun and pointed it at officers.  Three officers fired their weapons and Alvarado was struck multiple times.

Officers called for paramedics and rendered medical aide to Alvarado, where he was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.  The female victim was treated for a minor injury caused by Alvarado, but not hospitalized.  No officers were injured.

Through the investigation Investigators discovered Alvarado was in possession of a silver and black replica 1911 handgun.  Of the three officers involved in the shooting, two have four-years of service and the other has seven years of service.

On Monday, March 16, 2020 Alvarado died as a result of his injuries.

Police have attached a commercial photograph of the replica 1911 handgun used by Alvarado in this incident.  This is not the replica handgun seized by police.
