On Friday, October 12, 2018 around 5:00 PM Chandler Police Dispatch received a 911 call from a female who advised the resident at 854 W. Calle Del Norte was suicidal and armed with a gun. The caller identified the resident as 84-year-old Kay Kenniker.
When the first officer arrived on-scene he contacted Kenniker standing outside his residence. The officer saw Kenniker holding a handgun as he attempted to speak with him. Moments later, Kenniker fired one round at the officer and went back into his residence. Officers immediately sought cover, established a perimeter, and began to evacuate nearby residents.
Meanwhile, Kenniker exited his home armed with a rifle. Kenniker walked to the backyard of his residence and pointed the rifle at a second officer who was holding a perimeter position in the alley. This Officer, and another officer in the alley, each fired their weapons at Kenniker. Kenniker sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No officers were injured.
The two involved officers were placed on administrative leave, a standard Departmental procedure.
