On Monday, October 15, 2018, the Chandler Police Department’s Traffic Section & Bike Unit will conduct a citywide pedestrian/ bicyclist education and enforcement campaign from 8 am to 6 pm. Officers assigned to this detail will stop motorists, pedestrians, or bicyclists who violate any pedestrian state traffic laws or any applicable Chandler city codes. This day-long detail is a show of support for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s NHTSA Statewide Pedestrian & Bicyclist Focus Education and Enforcement Effort.
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) provided funding for this event.
The campaign’s mission is to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety, and in turn, reduce collisions involving these groups with motor vehicles. According to Arizona Crash Facts, 197 pedestrians were killed in collisions on Arizona roadways in 2016. In that same year, 31 bicyclists died as a result of injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions. These numbers are 50% and 72% increases, respectively, when compared to 2012 numbers.
The campaign will be a combination of educational and enforcement efforts where violators of traffic law may receive a citation.
Let’s watch for our pedestrians and bicyclists!
