Kyrene District Students Go Back to School

The Kyrene School District’s 2015-2016 school year begins Monday, August 3, 2015.  The KSD is comprised of elementary and middle schools in Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler.  There are five KSD elementary schools and two KSD middle schools within Chandler’s jurisdiction.

Motorists may experience heavy traffic around schools in the morning and afternoon hours, and should be prepared for encounters with school buses picking up and dropping off children at designated bus stops.  Pedestrian traffic will be on the increase as well with children either walking or bicycling to and from school.

All of the KSD elementary and junior high schools in Chandler have school zones, along with pick-up and drop-off locations for parents.  Remember, the speed limit in school zones is 15 miles per hour, and passing in school zones is prohibited.  The pick-up and drop-off locations at these schools are designed with the safety of children in mind. Please obey the instructions for these ingress and egress locales.

Prior to the start of the school year, drive, walk, or ride the route to and from school with your child.  Make it a point of emphasis that your child use the same route every day and knows the street names along the route. Ensure your child is accompanied by a friend or sibling when walking or riding a bike to school.

Point out any areas of refuge, in the event your children encounter a suspicious or dangerous situation.  Areas may include a business, church, government building, or even another school.  Talk to your children about the need to create distance should they experience such an encounter.  Children should be instructed to run away and draw attention to themselves by yelling and screaming.
