On Sunday, August 12, 2012 around 6:30pm an 11-year-old boy was contacted in the men’s restroom at the Red Robin restaurant located at 3420 W. Chandler Boulevard by 22-year-old John Isabel Chavez. Mr. Chavez, a level two registered sex offender, grabbed the boy in the restroom, rubbed the child’s shoulders, and told the boy he would be at his house later in the evening. When the child attempted to leave the restroom, Mr. Chavez blocked his path.
Eventually the child was able to get away from Mr. Chavez. After telling his mother what happened, the Chandler Police were dispatched to the scene. Meanwhile, Mr. Chavez left the scene in a red pick-up truck.
When the first officer arrived on-scene at the Red Robin, dispatch advised of a single-vehicle collision involving a red pick-up truck. The collision scene was in close proximity to the location of the Red Robin. Officers were able to identify Mr. Chavez as the operator of the red pick-up truck, as well as the suspect in the assault at the Red Robin. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.
Mr. Chavez was initially placed under arrest for DUI and transported to a local hospital, where he underwent treatment for his injuries from the collision. Upon his release from the hospital, Mr. Chavez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count each of Assault, Disorderly Conduct, Unlawful Imprisonment, DUI, and DUI with a BAC of .08 or Above.
Mr. Chavez was convicted of Child Molestation in 2010. His sentence was suspended, and he was placed on lifetime probation. Mr. Chavez currently resides in Mesa.
