Officer Involved Shooting Ruled Suicide

On November 28, 2011 around 6:45 pm Adam Buckner challenged officers with a firearm in the 5000 block of West Jupiter Way.  This was after the suspect pointed his weapon at a neighbor.

As Mr. Buckner was fleeing, he stopped and turned his gun on Officer Kinnaman, who drew his service weapon on the suspect.  Mr. Buckner then moved into a tactical position, partially concealing himself from the officer.  Mr. Buckner cycled a round from his .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol and fired one round into his own head.

Upon hearing the gunshot, Officer Kinnaman believed Mr. Buckner was firing at him and a second officer, who recently arrived at the scene. Officer Kinnaman immediately fired one round, striking the suspect in the torso.  Officers converged on the suspect and, after calling for the Chandler Fire Department, began lifesaving measures on Mr. Buckner.

An autopsy was conducted on Mr. Buckner’s body and, the results of this examination reveal the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.  The bullet strike from the officer’s weapon was ruled a potentially survivable wound.
