DNA Identifies Rape Suspect

A 2004 Sexual Assault Suspect is identified through DNA as Santos Basillio O’Dell, age 32, a California Transient.

On June 10, 2004, a 17-year-old young woman was walking home from a friend’s house when she was sexually assaulted.  DNA from the crime scene was entered into CODIS (Combined DNA Index System).

As a result of a protective order violation conviction in Orange County California, Santos O’Dell submitted DNA to the Orange County District Attorney, which was also entered into CODIS.  On September 1, 2010, Chandler Police received notification of a match with the sample from the 2004 assault to O’Dell.  Chandler Police obtained a warrant for O’Dell’s arrest and worked closely with Newport Beach, CA, Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office in locating and capturing the suspect on February 2, 2011.

O’Dell is awaiting an extradition hearing in California to face charges in Arizona.
