The Chandler Police Public Information Office (PIO) serves all local and national media members, citizens and internal customers with a variety of duties. Members of the PIO Unit were instrumental in organizing the Department’s Annual Awards Ceremony, Volunteer Awards Ceremony and the quarterly awards and promotion ceremonies. This year, the Public Information Unit hosted its first ever “Media Day,” which provided education and training to members of the media about Department philosophy and policy, City demographics, police operations and law enforcement accreditation. The Unit also organized a Department of Public Safety Amber and Silver Alert training session for detectives and other Phoenix Valley public information officers.
This year, the Unit disseminated over 40 press releases and radio and on-camera interviews. A major component of the PIO Unit is the management of the Department’s social media sites such as the Twitter, Facebook and official website account. The Chandler Police Department continues to experience an increase in followers with well over 17,000 followers on Twitter and over 21,000 on Facebook.
The PIO Unit is extremely active on social media sites, with an underlying goal of providing educational and safety-related content to people who live, work and visit the City of Chandler. The Department is one of the top agencies in social media posts and engagement in the Valley.

The Internal Affairs Unit oversees the handling of all internal investigations, as well as internal and external complaints. In 2017, the Unit logged ten external complaints, 30 internal complaints, 115 counseling statements, and two early intervention programs.
The Hiring Unit handles all aspects of recruiting, hiring and pre-employment background checks, which includes hosting recruitment processes for positions ranging from police officer to dispatcher to detention officer. In 2017, this Unit hired 19 police officers, 25 civilian employees, and two part-time contract employees. The Unit also facilitated over 14 recruitment events, which included two police officer testing processes. Members of this Unit also conducted 23 audits in 2017, ensuring quality control and confirming that Department and accreditation standards are met. In 2017, the in-house polygrapher completed 110 pre-employment polygraph exams for the Department.
The Accreditation Manager oversees all components of the re-accreditation process. There are 484 proofs of compliance required by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in order to maintain accredited status. This year was a re-accreditation year for the Department, which entailed an on-site audit by CALEA. The Chandler Police Department passed their process and once again received the Gold Standard. In 2017, the Department performed 113 policy revisions.
By investing in the future and maintaining best practices, the Chandler Police Department will continue to instill citizen and employee confidence in the Department and position itself as a world class organization.
