The Desert Breeze Precinct enhanced its strong working relationship with the Chandler Fashion Center and surrounding businesses that make up our Retail District. Officers developed positive relationships with the business community and were a visible presence to those they serve. This dedicated patrol area afforded officers the ability to complete timely and thorough investigations in an effort to hold offenders accountable. The combination of community outreach and education contributed to a reduction in calls for service within the Retail District.

Members of the Desert Breeze precinct attended a number of faith-based community events where officers made connections and furthered relationships by meeting with community partners at synagogues, temples, churches, and other religious centers. Officers learned more about the community they serve while Chandler citizens became personally acquainted with the men and women who police their neighborhoods. Desert Breeze Precinct also participated in “Recess with a Cop” where officers visited with students at eight elementary schools. This effort was intended for officers to build relationships with grade school children through positive interactions in their school environment.

This year, Desert Breeze Precinct started a Homeless Liaison Program that brought together a variety of community partners with the mission of sharing information and resources regarding best practices in addressing homelessness in Chandler. The homeless liaison officer hosted training for each Desert Breeze patrol team to educate officers about resources available to assist them with homeless outreach efforts.

The Chandler Police Department partnered with the Neighbors application to provide a platform for police and the community to share information and address crime trends. Officers utilized the application to link a crew of burglary suspects to multiple unreported burglaries that occurred in Chandler and Tempe.

Desert Breeze Precinct officers were recognized for their commitment to the profession and the City of Chandler. Three officers received the Spotlight Award, four officers received the Life-Saving Award, one officer received Officer of the Year, and the members of Team 6 received Patrol Team of the Year.

Main Station Precinct strengthened community partnerships in 2019 by focusing on individual community members and organizations including the Islamic Center of the East Valley, Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods (ICAN), AZCEND, AZ Boys & Girls Club, Chandler Chamber of Commerce, and the Chandler Unified School District. Information developed from partnerships assisted CPD in prioritizing efforts. Main Station used this information to develop a monthly program that utilized CPD’s Crime Prevention Officer to identify individuals committing both narcotics and property offenses. Efforts such as this contributed to a reduction in burglaries in 2019.

Main Station was responsible for operating CPD’s Field Training Program which consists of nine full-time officers and several satellite officers. In 2019, the Field Training Program graduated 15 highly qualified officers after completion of 18 weeks of detailed training.

The Main Station Precinct’s professionalism and commitment to the community, its partners, and intelligence-driven policing helped CPD reduce crime and provide a safe city.

Members of Chandler Heights made significant contributions in 2019 which resulted in these accomplishments:

• Chandler Heights added a new beat, additional officers, and personnel, reducing response times for priority one calls.
• The precinct continued its “Coffee with a Cop” event and expanded with “Smoothie with a Cop,” where officers met with the public in a relaxed environment.
• Precinct personnel addressed South Chandler’s increase in business start-ups, construction, and new housing with “high visibility” campaigns, Homeowners’ Association partnerships, and community events.
• Chandler Heights spearheaded a new crime prevention program utilizing the Neighborhoods app to establish a virtual block watch.
• Along with the Victim Services Unit, Chandler Heights held the third annual “Teddy Bear Drive,” netting over 600 stuffed animals.
• Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) were added to every patrol shift to assist first responders encountering a cardiac-related event.
• Patrol teams conducted traffic enforcement in several neighborhoods where they distributed information and educated citizens on reducing the likelihood of victimization.
• Chandler Heights focused on building relationships with businesses in order to promote safe work environments with participation from large businesses such as Circle K, Fry’s, Intel, Clarendale Senior Living, and Walmart.
• Police personnel were recognized for the exceptional jobs they do every day by sharing positive public contact on Twitter, Facebook, and the department’s website.

Additionally, the Fleet Unit identified and replaced an aging fleet. During 2019, 28 vehicles were replaced and an additional six vehicles were added to the fleet. The unit researched and identified 35 purchases. As part of these purchases, CPD will be implementing the first hybrid patrol vehicles, nine of which will be the new Ford Hybrid Police Interceptors. These vehicles will reduce fuel consumption and decrease carbon dioxide emissions.
