During 2019, the Planning Unit planned and facilitated infrastructure projects for the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). In February 2019, the Police Training Range staff moved into the newly constructed Public Safety Training Center range building. The 19,982 square foot building consists of an indoor 25 yard firing range, indoor 50 yard firing range, shoothouse training room, range classroom, weapons cleaning room, armorer’s work shop, storage, and office space. This completes the second and final phase of the Public Safety Training Center. The facility is shared between police and fire, allowing all Chandler Public Safety personnel to work and train together.
Design of the Police Main Station Lobby/Records Renovation started as a result of the Police Department Facilities Master Plan. The Planning Unit worked with the prosecutor’s office to design the most efficient use of space. In addition, a feasibility study was initiated for the Renovation of Relocated Firing Range Space to determine if conversion to a detention holding facility is practical and if not, to determine other practical uses. The study is expected to be completed in 2020.
Seventeen new grants were awarded to the police department in 2019. When combined with all other active grants, the value exceeded $1.1 million. Planning & Research administered these grants as well as 50 Intergovernmental Agreements/Memorandum of Understandings totaling more than $1.3 million.
The Chandler Police Department hosted the quarterly meeting for the International Association of Law Enforcement Planners (IALEP) – Southwest Chapter. Attendees were treated to a synchronized live Justice Clearinghouse presentation and webinar on Using Social Media as a Law Enforcement Professional. The presentation was filmed at the Annual IALEP Training Conference with an interactive dialogue with peers attending the conference. This was a unique format for Justice Clearinghouse and the feedback was very positive. Additionally, meeting attendees learned about the Ring and Neighborhood Watch Programs in the Digital Age and received a tour of the Chandler Public Safety Training Center.
A Crime Analysis & Research Unit (CARU) crime analyst was awarded the prestigious Arizona Association of Crime Analysts (AACA) Data Analysis Award for her innovative work supporting the Special Victims Unit. Crime analysis is the qualitative and quantitative study of crime and law enforcement information in combination with socio-demographic and spatial factors to apprehend criminals, prevent crime, reduce disorder, and evaluate organizational procedures.
